The assistant external director of CHISPAS, Victor Yengle (left), stands in front of the grand opening of Publix in Ocala, Fla. to protest in support of the Coalition of Immokalee Workers’ Fair Food Program, which to pay farmworkers a penny more per pound of tomatoes picked and give them a better living wage.
The rally was put on by members of Gainesville’s Interfaith Alliance for Immigrant Justice and CIW members.
“I am satisfied to have complete my mission to bike to Lakeland, but I am dissapointed to not have been welcomed,” said Oscar Oztoy, a farmworker and member of the Coalition of Immokalee Workers.

The Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW) are in the midst of a “five-city protest to demand humane working conditions for farmworkers harvesting tomatoes sold inside the stores of major supermarket chains.” (Democracy Now)
These photos are from in front of the Publix down the street from where I live. Other stores that they are protesting include Trader Joe’s, Giant/Ahold/Stop and Shop, and Kroger.
They’re asking for one penny more per pound of tomatoes that are picked. See the video below for some more context, and then demand fair food from your supermarket!
