The Florida Immigrant Coalition (FLIC) will be hosting its 6th Annual Congress at the University of Florida in Gainesville from Friday to Sunday.

About 250 Floridians are expected to rally together and celebrate immigrant advocacy as well as prepare for the challenges coming up for the 2012 legislative session. 

CHISPAS is currently working on a documentary that sheds light on the struggles undocumented youth faces. We would love to hear from some of you DREAMers! You can make this anonymous or you can share your true name if you are unafraid. This is not for any media publication, this is just so we can show our supporters (and opponents) why the DREAM Act makes sense.

Walking the streets of home,
Suspicious eyes following
My every move,
I go from block to block,
Journeying to my lifelong goal. 

At school, the stares never stop,
I can see their thoughts coming to life.
They judge me, they criticize me,
They wait for the lion to attack me. 

In the ‘hood, I see a face,
Staring down at me from every post.
The face is brown, dirty, Latino,
With a number to call for the I.C.E. 

The face is sad, tired, afraid,
Scared of that cold, dark box.
I look into the eyes and see
An ancestor looking down on me.

I walk around and see around me
A neighborhood I thought I loved.
Now it’s different, distant, almost empty,
I can see tumbleweeds rolling by 

I look around and never stop believing
That one day we’ll be one.
I DREAM of a day with no hate
That will pave the way to a brighter day. 

We are one, we are Latinos,
We are blacks, we are Asians.
We all have life-long wishes,
We never stop our dreaming. 

The Fight is alive,

We dream of a better life.

I am a DREAMer, I am a beaner,
I am someone with a plan,

As if the threat of deportation wasn’t enough. As if it weren’t enough that we have watched as undocumented youth after undocumented youth is placed in deportation proceedings. As if it weren’t enough that our entire communities live in fear and often times are targeted by law enforcement officials simply because of the color of their skin. Oh, North Carolina has yet to leave behind its past of Jim Crow laws. This is why, on Tuesday, September 6, undocumented youth will risk it all to take a stand against backwards policies that seek only to keep us in the shadows.

We’ve got news North Carolina: WE WILL NO LONGER REMAIN IN THE SHADOWS!


Currently, North Carolina’s community colleges admissions policy states that “students lawfully present in the United States shall have priority over any undocumented immigrant in any class or program of study”, leaving us as undocumented youth to choose from the leftover courses. 

If you’re undocumented, it’s time to drop the fear. Your silence will no longer protect you. You don’t have to apologize to anyone. You don’t have to be ashamed of your status. You are not alone. 

If you’re an ally, we need your help too. We need you to stand with us, side by side, as we risk it all for our families, for our communities, and for ourselves.
