Farmworkers and members of the Coalition of Immokalee Workers are fasting in front of the Publix Supermarkets headquarters this week. They are asking Publix to sign the Fair Food Agreement (which companies like Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s have already signed) and to agree to pay tomato pickers in Florida an extra penny per pound of tomatoes they pick.
I’ve worked for Publix for a little over five years, and I’ve been a big supporter of the CIW for two years. This Saturday, on the last day of the fast, I’m wearing my CIW “Fight for Fair Food” button to work. Let’s see how long it takes for my manager to fire me.
